Nothing Can Separate Us from the Love of God

“Neither height nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:39

Sometimes it seems to us that God is far away.

When difficulties come.

When prayers remain unanswered.

When we go through pain, loss, fear, or loneliness.

When we ourselves do not understand what is happening.

In such moments, it is easy to think:

“Perhaps God has left me.”

But Paul says something completely different.

He does not promise that there will be no more suffering in the life of a Christian.

He does not say that a believer will never cry, never be afraid, or never go through trials.

On the contrary.

Immediately before these words, Paul speaks of tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and the sword.

And then he draws this conclusion:

none of these things can separate us from the love of God.

This Does Not Mean There Will Be No Difficulties

We often want God’s love to mean a life without pain.

That if God loves us, problems will disappear, sickness will not come, loved ones will not leave us, and our prayers will always receive exactly the answer we expect.

But the Gospel does not make such a promise.

God’s love does not mean the absence of trials.

It means that trials do not have the final word.

You may walk through the valley—and God will not leave you.

You may cry—and God will not stop loving you.

You may not understand why this is happening—and God’s love will not become less.

You may not see a way out—and God will still be near.

“Neither Death nor Life…”

Paul speaks even more strongly:

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor rulers, neither things present nor things to come, nor powers, neither height nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38–39

Notice these words:

neither death nor life.

Neither what we know.

Nor what we fear.

Neither the present.

Nor the future.

Neither what is above us.

Nor what is beneath us.

Neither what is visible.

Nor what is invisible.

Nothing created.

Paul seems to pass through the entire universe and say:

If it is part of creation, it has no power to separate you from the love of God that is in Christ.

But What About My Sin?

Perhaps this question is even more important.

What should I do if I myself have turned away from God?

What if I have sinned?

If I have fallen?

If I have done what I promised I would never do again?

Can my sin destroy God’s love?

God’s love does not mean that God calls sin good.

He does not cease to be holy.

But that is precisely why Christ came into the world.

Our salvation is not built on how well we are able to hold on to God.

It is built on how firmly God holds on to us in Christ.

Therefore, when you fall—do not run away from God.

Return to Him.

When you have sinned—do not hide.

Confess it.

When you feel ashamed—do not think that there is no way back for you.

The Cross of Christ was established precisely because humanity could not save itself.

God’s Love Has a Name

Paul does not simply say:

“Nothing can separate us from the love of God.”

He says:

“…from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This is the center of this promise.

God’s love is not an abstract feeling.

It was revealed in Christ.

We see it in the fact that Jesus came to us.

In the fact that He carried our sin.

In the fact that He went to the Cross.

In the fact that He gave His life.

And when we look at the Cross, we do not see a God who is far away.

We see a God who came as close as it was possible to come.

So close that He gave Himself for us.

Therefore, Do Not Be Afraid

Perhaps today you are going through something that no one else knows about.

Perhaps there is a fear inside you that you cannot explain.

Perhaps you are tired.

Perhaps it seems to you that God is silent.

Perhaps you cannot see what tomorrow will bring.

But there is one thing you do not need to be afraid of losing:

the love of God.

Not because you will always be strong.

Not because you will never make a mistake.

Not because you will be able to understand everything.

But because God’s love in Christ is stronger than anything you may encounter on this journey.

Therefore, when fear comes—remember:

neither death nor life.

Neither the present nor the future.

Neither height nor depth.

Nothing created.

Can separate you from the love of God,

which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And perhaps today you do not need to know how everything will end.

Perhaps it is enough to know

Who is walking beside you.

“Neither height nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
